Glyph Interface & Glyph Matrix

Glyph Interface & Glyph Matrix

The Glyph Interface is Nothing’s signature LED lighting system on the rear of all Nothing phones. First introduced with the Nothing Phone (1) in July 2022, it has undergone a number of design revisions, including adding and removing segments on different phone models, and having a single Glyph Light on Phone (3a) Lite. The Glyph Matrix made its debut with the Nothing Phone (3) in July 2025.

Both the Glyph Interface and the Glyph Matrix have a “Glyph Developer Kit” SDK (GDK), which allows third-party app developers to integrate their app with the Glyph Interface and develop Glyph Toys for the Glyph Matrix.

Origins & functionality

The original Glyph Interface first appeared on Nothing’s first mobile phone, the Nothing Phone (1), and featured five lighting segments, incorporating 12 individually addressable zones comprised of over 900 individual LED lights.[1,2]

Each ringtone and notification sound built into Nothing OS has a bespoke, handcrafted Glyph pattern, which lights up when a call or notification is received and the phone is face down with Flip to Glyph enabled.

In Nothing OS, users can control settings for the Glyph Interface, such as brightness. Basic features include Flip to Glyph notifications and visual indicators for volume and charging. There was also an easter egg, which enabled music visualisation - a feature which has since been added as a default option.[3]

Glyph Interface Evolution

With Phone(2) in July 2023, Nothing introduced 11 light segments with 33 addressable zones, which allowed for a new Glyph Progress and timer feature.[4]

Nothing also released Essential Notifications, letting users keep one lighting zone illuminated when a user has an unread notification from a certain app. With Phone (3), this evolved further into a more advanced rules based system, allowing users to set rules for certain apps or people and notifications containing key words.[5]

In July 2023, in a collaboration with Swedish House Mafia, Nothing released the Glyph Composer app, which gave users the opportunity to create their own ringtones and notification audio using a pre-set pack of sounds. Audio packs included Modem, Bug, 606, Brrr, Dan and Swedish House Mafia.[6]

Glyph Matrix

With the Phone (3) in July 2025, Nothing replaced the traditional LED strip Glyph Interface with a Glyph Matrix 25 x 25 circular, micro-LED display. The screen consists of 489 micro-LEDs, enabling more expressive animations, symbols, pictures and notifications.

There are a number of included “Glyph Toys”, both functional and playful. At release, Phone (3) came with a Glyph Mirror (for taking photos), Digital Clock, Battery indicator, Stopwatch, Solar clock, Spin the Bottle, Rock Paper Scissors, Leveller and Magic 8 Ball. The Leveller and Magic 8 Ball were released in collaboration with designers and developers from the Nothing community. The Glyph Matrix can be interacted with using a dedicated Glyph Button on the rear of the phone.*

The Glyph Matrix made a reappearance in March 2026 with the |Nothing Phone (4a) Pro. Although the matrix itself was physically larger by 57%, the number of LEDs was reduced to 137, meaning the resolution was lower than that of Phone (3). There was also no button for controlling the matrix, instead relying on the user choosing a Glyph Toy in the settings menu.[7]

Glyph Light

In a different move, the Phone (3a) Lite only featured a single Glyph Light in the lower right hand corner of the rear panel. This had a similar functionality to the regular Glyph Interface, pulsing different amounts and lengths of time for notifications and calls.

Glyph Bar

Nothing opted to try something else new for the Phone (4a) Glyph Interface - the Glyph Bar. Released in March 2026, the Phone (4a) features a vertical array of 7 square Glyph lights, including the red recording light. Comprising of 63 mini-LEDs in total, the Glyph Bar is claimed to be up to 40% brighter than Phone (3a) Pro's Glyph Interface. Each square contains 9 individual zones for smoother, more detailed light patterns.[8]

Glyph Developer Kit SDK

In February 2024, Nothing released the first Glyph Developer Kit (GDK) for Phone (1) and Phone(2), allowing app developers to integrate their apps with the Glyph Interface directly. This was later updated to support Phone (2a), and a second version was released to support the Glyph Matrix. With this, users created apps to create custom ringtones, and expanded the range of available Glyph Toys, which were later added to the Nothing Playground, so that users could find and download them all in one place.
